Frank and Erin Wang (far right) brought their three children–all first grade and younger–out for English one Sunday morning in August! Ruth had gone into their neighborhood looking for someone, and had left her card with Frank’s father (third from right). The family was not disappointed, and continued to come out weekly for the Sunday morning children’s program called WHIZ Kids–a bilingual Bible memory program which, also, allowed time for a Bible story and song time. The first verse the Wang children learned was “Do not repay evil for evil, but do what is right in the eyes of everybody!” That week, when the two big brothers were arguing, little sister Ya De was heard saying in a loud, clear, authoritative voice, “Don’t repay evil for evil!” God’s Word certainly was powerful to change their lives! Frank thanked the Harbours for introducing them to the Bible.
Mark and Ruth were preparing to return Stateside for a few months towards the end of October 2015, so Frank and Erin invited them to come and dine! What a great time of fellowship was shared with the whole family! What the Harbours learned about the family gave them great encouragement to believe God for His grace in their lives. It seems that Frank’s grandmother had become a Christian, and a faithful member of the local Presbyterian Church! Unfortunately, in her old age she had become an invalid, and depended heavily upon Frank’s mother for custodial care. Later, Frank’s mom would be honored by the town for her faithfulness in caring for her mother-in-law for many years until the elderly Mrs. Wang passed away.
“Honor your father and mother, that you may be blessed with a long life!” This verse of promise is also learned by WHIZ Kids students in Sunday School at the Good Neighbor in Dalin, Taiwan. Filial piety and honoring of the elderly is a strong moral value embraced by the Chinese people, including the people of rural Taiwan. While Frank’s mother faithfully cared for her mother-in-law, she has not yet come to know her mother-in-law’s God and Savior, Jesus. She has yet to understand that He is a God who says, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you,” and “You and your whole household will be saved!” Mark and Ruth believe that some day she–and her whole family–will!
